Molly Murphy Accident: 43-Year-Old Resident of Mamaroneck and Son Michael Donovan Volpe Killed By School Bus In Mamaroneck Accident
Police have released the identities of the mother and child tragically killed while walking to school. The victims have been positively identified as Molly Murphy Donovan, a 43-year-old resident of Mamaroneck, and her 6-year-old son, Michael Donovan Volpe.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, when the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting that an adult and a child had been struck by a vehicle on Mamaroneck Avenue near New Street.
Authorities quickly dispatched officers, detectives, and an ambulance to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the mother and child lying in the roadway. Tragically, the young boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
His mother, Molly Murphy Donovan, was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.
Initial investigations revealed that a school bus, which was traveling eastbound from New Street and making a left turn onto Mamaroneck Avenue with a green light, struck the victims.
The bus was en route to Mamaroneck Avenue School, carrying several students and an assistant at the time of the accident. Fortunately, none of the passengers on the bus were injured.
As the bus was making its turn, several parents and children were crossing the street at the crosswalk with the walk sign.
The bus driver, a 68-year-old man from Mount Vernon, is cooperating fully with investigators. Police officials have indicated that the incident appears to be a tragic accident.
The driver’s identity is currently being withheld as the investigation remains active, and no charges have been filed at this time.
